Well, we got my wife to go also and we had a really nice trip. The drive from Houston is about 3 hours. My wife and I had plans to go to a Red Cross fund raising event Saturday night, so we decided to go Friday night to cut down the driving on Saturday. I called the Gunter Hotel on Friday afternoon and it only cost $10 more than the "early bird" rate.
I really appreciate the effort that goes into show reports, now. My pics are horrible (we couldn't find the camera on the way out of the door)and I did not keep good notes of who's knives I was taking pictures of. I told my wife and kids that they needed to pick their favorite knife, so that I could take a picture of them holding it.
We made it through the show in about two hours. All of the makers were so nice. My kids and wife had lots of questions and the makers were very generous with their time. I didn't get one "Daddy I'm bored" the whole time. The only negative I could say about the show is the poor lighting. It was especially difficult to see the details in the damascus when the knives were on the table. That said, all of the makers I asked said, "Please pick it up." We left the show and walked over to the Alamo. It was a beautiful day to be outside. We ate lunch on the Riverwalk and then headed home.
Here are my horrible quality pics:
Breakfast at the hotel.
Entrance to the show.
My son's favorite. The maker said, "You'll get a much better picture if you pick it up."
My wife's favorite. She especially liked the meterorite bolster.
David Lisch's "Shop Rat" The rat tail curves so you can use it like a bird and trout knife. David directed my son to look at the knife closely and got an awesome reaction when my son discovered that under the tail the knife is "anatomically" correct.
Next year I will bring a camera and take better notes. If anyone can identify the knives in the pictures I would appreciate it. I do not know if the show will be a family event for me next year, but it was a fun way to experience it this year.
