Need it for walking/short ski rides in the park (it is actually more wood than park ;) ).
not heavy, must take AA batteries. Im thinking about Zebra, is fllood light good for my task? any input appreciated, thanks

I have one of the Zebra lights that feeds on an AA. I use a NiMH rechargeable. Nice light, 3 output levels, nothing not to like. Became Mrs. Powernoodle's favorite light when our electricity was out for a week in 2009.

I really like my 123 based Zebra. I think a floody light will serve you best in a heavily wooded area.

I like the Zebra's for a camp/home task light. For Biking and more throw I use a Fenix HP10. I've also used a Petzl Tikka plus, with multiple levels it has served me pretty well.

I bought the Fenix HP10 about a month ago. Fantastic product. Very comfortable, if a bit on the heavy side. Being able to choose brightness is great, run time is excellent, and the circuitry that keeps the light at a steady output all the way to the end is great. Great value for the dough.

I used it for about an hour and a half tonight and it performed beautifully. Terrific throw. This is my third headlamp in my search for the right one. I found it.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Zebralight H501, but since you're planning on going through areas with snow, I'd go with the H501w for the warmer tint and better color rendition. Colors can look pretty washed out if you're surrounded by snow, and the warmer tint will help with distinguishing between snowmen and trees.

thanks everyone! lots of good info here
I have bought an inexpensive black diamond gizmo so far, but still considering a Zebra… found one for sale locally and hope to see it IRL soon.

Of the ones I have, I like the H501w the best. I put it on the clip (comes with it) instead of the headband and put it on my belt. At night on a trail, having it lower creates more shadows and gives you better depth perception. Having the light on my head is annoying at times as well, so I like having it down low.
