Sorry, I meant to post this Friday and things just got away from me.

(I don't see any related posts on this over the last few days, but I won't take it personally if it turns out this is a dup and needs to be merged/removed.)

I had a chance to drop by the Buck factory store last week on my way to a doctor's appointment and found, to my disappointment, that the retail store was closed for the day. On the bright side, it was closed preparing for the factory inventory sale.

For those of you living in the Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Liberty Lake area (and that would include you guys up in Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry), Buck knives is hosting one of their factory inventory sales this coming week.

Unlike inventory sales they've held in the past at the Greyhound Center, this sale will be for the entire week (rather than one day), and it will be held at their factory location at 660 S. Lochsa Street, Post Falls, Idaho.

The sale will be Monday-Friday, 10:00AM to 6:00PM, and be operated out of the facory retail store. (Note, I have somewhat conflicting data from another source that suggests the hours will be 10:00AM to 4:00PM. A phone call should sort that out.)

Discounts from 30% to 60% are common at these sales, and I must confess they are the main reason I no longer have an accurate count of how many Buck knives I own.

Oh, and BTW, it looks like Buck and the NRA are collaborating on a knife. Press release here.

"We listened to our membership when they said they wanted us to offer a USA made incentive,” stated Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the NRA. “We know from previous programs that knives are very popular among our membership. When it came to making a decision of which brand we wanted to offer, Buck Knives was at the top of the list,” he said.

Hot Damn.

Discounts from 30% to 60% are common at these sales

And followed by markups of 100% to 500% on eBay ...... preying on those not lucky enough to live in the NorthWest......

True story. One of these days I am going to take the drive.

I don't hold out any hope that the sale will also be on the website. The logistics of selling direct from the store rather than on the website just have to be easier to deal with. They can easily sell buildouts, etc., where they have a very limited number at the store and not have to worry about getting orders for 100 of them when there are only 50 available. There's also the fact that they don't have to deal with all the issues involved with shipping all over the country when selling to walk in customers.

Over selling items on the website seems to happen regularly when new offerings appear and it must really be a pain to have to notify everyone and do CC refunds. At the store, when they are gone, they're gone so no refunds or "we're sorry" messages are required. Selling the same items both places at the same time would just compund those issues.

They should fix their website so when the last of an item is sold it no longer shows on the website.

Actually, one would think all websites would be set up that way in the first place and since they give you a worldwide market, would be vastly superior to in person sales.

But.....maybe they regard the good deals as a gift to the local people.

That's ok, too.

Our web site should monitor the inventory, plain and simple. Right now we are forced to do this manually and when we do that, we are asking for trouble. Due to a series of events, we ran out and grossly oversold some of the web offerings recently. I know that was very frustrating and I cant apologize enough for the hassel I know it caused.

We are in a catch 22 right now.
Our existing web site does not do what we want in regards to this issue.
Its cost prohibative to fix the current site.
We dont have the $$ in the budget to replace the current site.
We know we cant Not Offer build outs on the site since a lot of folks that cant just stroll into our store would also like to get a crack at these...so...
We do the best we can with a manual system.

When it works thats a good thing but when it doesnt, well we know all about that unfortunately.

Thanks for the info Joe. Speaking of the website, do you have an idea when some of the newer offerings will start being available? Been waiting for the Hoodlum and Chairman 110 for a while now but they just keep showing "unavailable".

A few years back there was a list sent out to the BCCI. That would be a nice thing to see again!

Well, many thanks are in order for the last offering of build-outs even though it caused some problems.

I hope Buck can continue to do it for those of us who live far away.

It is greatly appreciated.

i have to say dittos with my steamed calllege above
aand i would add my two centiveos to ohen cepel
that if some how buck could find a way to send us a letter with the offerings
we out here in the boonies would gladly pay HANDLING and POSTAGE
to be able to have a chance at them before the ebay sellers in post falls get to them
and make mucho buckes off us so far far away....

as to the web site
i heard that they are looking in to what they can do
they are i belive going to have to go to a new system of some sort
and wow ... it is expensive....
as i under stood it
the last time we were able to order
it cost a tad more then they thought it would
so if you as a far far away folk
would speak up and say
sure jest a buck or two more for shiping
and i would be in happy happy land again
and wont need any free bubble up either!!!

I know there is an issue with the Hoodlum...its selling way better than forcast! Unfortunately, this means that we have to hit up our suppliers with a revised forcast for the raw materials. It takes time for each of them to react and then more time for us to turn those materials into knives. The last I heard the Hoodlums were on backorder and that is probably what is happening with the 110 Chairman as well. Once we satisfy the dealer orders on backorder, we can pull some inventory for the web site.
The plan was that all build outs or discontinued knives, except for those where less than 10 are avialable, should be added to the web specials page so that everyone has a shot at them, regardless of where they live. We use the less than 10 rule because if we only have 10 or so and add them to the web site, they will be gone and oversold before we have a chance to get a cup of coffee.

Well,at least we get some kind of chance at something special, some companies don't do much in trying to satisfy everyone,Buck always tries ,although sometimes we qall know you can;t make everyone happy, somebody there is thinking and trying to do something different.

Thank you again Joe for the reply. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the Hoodlum and CS110. They'll become available sooner or later and the wait will be worth it, of that I'm confident.

Just a simple email to us and we will phone our order in.... Thank YOU Buck for trying to get them WONDERFUL odd build-outs to us,they are a big part of what I and a lot of other'Buck Nuts' live for!

I called and confirmed the hours today.

10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

I managed to fly by there this evening on the way home. Got to spend about 15 minutes in the shop before they closed.

Man, I hate being broke.

They've got Stockman and Cadet knives ("factory blems") for $15. The "blemishes" are, in many cases, so small you have to have them pointed out. That's a $50 and a $40 knife for $15. *Sigh*

They have the new "PaperStone" handled Buck 110 and 112. These are real, full sized, standard steel, grind, temper, etc., but with a very lightweight synthetic handle with really nice ergos. Deep red/maroon and dark green handles. Oh, man. The answer for those who love the 110 & 112 but don't like the carry weight.

I finally got to handle the new Paradigm. It's the size of the Vantage, but a bit heavier. The new "shift lock" mechanism integrates almost invisibly into the front bolster. The ASAP opening assist pops the blade open with surprising energy; make sure you have a good grip before gently pushing the flip tab.

Very nice. Must have. (I believe, with the discounts, I may "receive" one of these for Father's Day.)

:)

Handled a Vanguard, with white bone handle. Nice hunting knife. Wide four-inch blade, well balanced and fitted for hunting bigger stuff. I wonder if the budget will allow one of those . . . ?

For anyone planning to go, you should note that they're seeing heavy morning traffic, lighter afternoon traffic. When I got there at 5:45, there were only five of us. Earlier in the day, they were mobbed, and had personnel directing traffic, allowing just so many at a time into the store.

So, gotta talk to the boss tomorrow and see if he'll approve an afternoon of hooky.

Me thinks that if you want anything that is still on the web specials, you best be ordering them now.

Well, despite schedule pressures, I did manage to wind up at the factory today just before closing.

On instructions from my wife (in the name of Father's Day), I diligently perused the selection and chose a couple . . . a few . . . okay, several items.

For about the price of one or two pieces, I came home with . . . let's see . . . a Pathfinder, a couple of EcoLite Rangers, a pair of EcoLite Folding Hunters, two BuckLites (orange), twin Vantage Selects, and a Paradigm Avid (pair o' dimes?).

The EcoLites (MSRP $42 & $45) were all $10, because of a minor blemish on the handle. The BuckLites (MSRP $30?) were all $8 due to a small black mark where the orange handle met the ricasso. The Vantage Selects (MSRP $35) were all $10 due to a minor handle finishing blem.

The Pathfinder and the Paradigm were non-blems, and were $29 and $60 respectively.

Oh, and I forgot one -- a yellow handled 301 Stockman (MSRP $50) with minor handle blemish, $15.

This evening, I used the Pathfinder to hack up a number of Top Round roasts that I got on sale for $2.68/lb. That thing is a delight to use. Very slicy. :D The handle is just right for my medium hands, and the extra inch of pointy steel doesn't get in my way. I can highly recommend the 105 Pathfinder.

The BuckLite (orange) fixed blade knives are ideal for smaller hands. If you have a kid you're teaching to hunt, this is a very capable hunter/skinner. Heck, it would serve well for an adult.

The Paradigm is even snappier opening than the previous generation of Buck's ASAP designs. Snappier than the Rush and Sirius. A seriously energetic little bugger. The "shift lock" is cool. Locks the knife closed. Locks the knife open. The only "down side" is that the lock is positioned so that it favors right handed people. A lefty can certainly use it, but instead of using a thumb to slide the latch, you'd use the middle finger.

I will try the Paradigm with the clip for a while, but my hunch is that I will wind up removing it, as I did with the Vantage.

All in all, a most satisfying visit to the Buck factory.

:)
