This morning I've recieved 2 different emails from knifemaking correndences that were infected with a virus. Luckily my anti-virus software caught them.

The emails arrived seperately but looked very normal from the senders that I've been in touch with. The subject line was the normal "RE:...." with the topic of our previous discussions. The email had an attachment.

The virus was: w32.badtrans....or something like that.

I may get a virus warning from norton about once a month...but I recieved 2 just this morning...so that's the reason for this post.

I quarantined and cleaned the files, then notified the senders that they may have a problem without knowing about it.

Safe surfin'

I picked it up lastnight and unfortunately my Norton Anti-Virus update wasn't current. I 0nly missed it by 3 days but still got the virus anyway. That's a nasty little critter. Very sneaky. I was up till 4:00 AM trying to clean my system. People who send create these virus's should be viewed just like terrorists. They should all be hung by their nads till they turn inside out and then be fed to a herd of wild hogs.

Dang! The count is up to 3!

I've had 3 assaults from this thing today.

Anyone else getting hit?

I had the NIMBA virus weeks ago and it took days to fully recover everything. I did't even open the damm thing.

Thanks for the heads up, time to update the virus scan.

I agree, whoever is creating these #$%*&# things should be charged as terrorists. The economic cost/loss in the world to viruses has to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars yearly.

These viruses often spread thru servers where email is rerouted after being sent.

For info, the Dept. of Treasury, in NY is the Federal Agency responsible for computer fraud, etc. They have a web site which can be found by searching for US Dept. of Treasury, or something similar.

by the "Badtrans" virus this morning. Email from a maker with a pic file attached. I hit download and then noticed that the pic had the title, "ME_Nude.SCR". That didn't sound right! I immediately went to the Norton site for an live update, did a scan and caught the virus and deleted it.

Badtrans captures keystroke and will allow a hacker to get a passwords and credit card numbers. Here's some info on it:

Be careful with downloads!

Yeah, it seems to have gotten into the maker community. I've been attacked 3-4 times in the last two days. All the bad files have a .scr ending and are attached to replies from the last email you sent the maker or other person.

I like your style Max, especially the wild hog part... :D

Yep!

Sing, that link is the virus that keeps hitting me. That SOB has been coming in about 2-3X a day since Saturday. Norton is stopping it though....

Whew!I got an email from Frank Niro with Re as the subject and some kind of attachment. Didn't open the attachment as I seldom if ever do without checking with the sender first. I emailed Frank about it and it came back undeliverable.

I haven't gotten that one yet but another one with a person's name in the from column and the inscription RE: followed by a blank space in the subject column has been coming in. It's definitely a virus. These idiots who come up with these things should be tortured. And Microsoft should also be punished for foisting their garbage software on the world. If the Windows software had been designed correctly in the first place instead of being rushed to market there would be no problem from these viruses. Unfortuantely we are stuck with Windows for a long long long time because it's everywhere and industry has invested in it.

I checked my email after getting in from deer hunting and both were from the "knife community". The subject line was RE: as stated above. I knew better than to open the attachments.

You can go to http://www.antivirus.com and run a free "house call". It takes a while to download the pattern files but it is up to date and will find anything that is presently on your machine. Sorry, it can't catch it as you get it, just after the fact.

I was going to start a thread about this myself. I've been getting these also. Does look like the "terrorists" have invaded our forums. So far all my mail from known forumites has been clean.

I got an email the other day from a knifemaker with no words, but was to include an attachment. I assumed it to be a pic, but when I tried to open it, a screen popped up that said some kind of error message. I dont see anything else effected, but everytime I tried to open or reply, I got the same error message. I have since deleted anything to do with that message, and so far so good.

I got it from 3 people, Maxthe knife, chad benson, and i cant remmeber the 3rd person. I just open the email, but not the attachmentm, then delete it all.

I have had this sent to me about 5 times now and I have been able to catch it and delete it also.Maybe we can all get it stopped soon..
Sing -Email me and let me know how that last knife is working out Please.

Danbo, unfortunately that virus has already done it's dirty work, and deleting the message now won't help. You should immediately do a virus scan on your PC, because you are infected. What you saw when you opened that attachment was the virus saying hi. It will likely have now mailed itself to everyone on your email list. Not your fault; just how these damned things work. I'm not sure what this virus does to your system beside propagate itself and travel on to others.

Folks,

This is a sneaky little booger!

Please go up and read the link that sing posted!

"The worm, called "Badtrans," spreads through Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) Outlook or Outlook Express e-mail programs and automatically sends itself to unanswered e-mails in inboxes, according to several antivirus companies.

The attachment, which contains the malicious program, can be executed simply by reading or previewing it and doesn't need to be double clicked or opened separately, experts said.

The worm contains a keystroke logger which can be used to record what people type to obtain passwords and credit card numbers, they said."

According to this report, you don't even have to open the attachment. You can trigger this thing by simply viewing the email or even just previewing it!

I don't think that the old thought "don't open the attachment" is working with this one.

Hey Z! BTW, you have it! it came over this morn in an email from you. My norton is working OT.
