Heads up , Spyderench available

That's the chap who designed them. He's still got several that he's selling off slowly. It's tempting, but I haven't got the dosh at the moment. :(

I've had one for a couple of years with a plain edge blade.
Impressions-
Bad!
the pliers are not too good, because the bottom jaw is quite wide/thick (14mm approx) which coupled with the fact that the jaws aren't very long restricts their usefulness, the slipjoint does what it says, it slips when you open or close the pliers.
Its easy to trap fingers or palms in the handles of the pliers as they overlap in use.
No wire cutters!!!!!
The small pozi/phillips driver on the 3 sided file does'nt seem to fit any cross head screws I have come across?
The adjustable spanner/wrench works but there is quite a bit of play on the moving jaw so it slips off the nut/bolt under stress.
Good!
Its a spyderco so the blade is SHARP!!!!!!!
The pocket clip works well.
The 1/4inch hex adapter works well and its position means that its easy to drive screws with the tool extende/folded out.
The other end of the 3 sided file has a slotted driver which means that it can be used to access recessed screw heads.
The file is removable so it could be used to put a fresh edge on the knife blade.
As the tool splits into 2 the screwdriver can be used seperately from the adjustable wrench.
It is aestheticaly & ergonomically well designed
It looks Great.
It looks strange so is sure to get attention if thats what you want.
I'm glad I have one but I wouldn't recommend it as a one & only multitool or EDC but its a worthwhile addition to a multitool collection although I think even the most ardent Spyderco fan would have to admit there are quite a few better multitools available.

Isn't a new Spyderench (or some type of multi-tool) supposed to be coming out this year? I thought I remember reading something about it over at the Spyderco forum.

A very good analysis Cheviot, I echo your conclusions. I love my SpyderRench, but some of the reasons why are very superficial:

1) I like the clever way everything fits together, and enjoy "playing" with it.
2) The quality of manufacture is top-notch.
3) I'm the only kid on my block who has one! (and enjoy the fuss everyone makes when I whip my tool out. ;) )

That being said, I pack a Leatherman Wave when there's serious work to be done. The SpydeRench is better to carry to neighborhood barbeques or family camping trips, where a simple multi tool chore is more likely to have an appreciative audience. :)

That a redesigned Spyderench will be introduced. Keep your eyes peeled my friends.

Btw, I do believe that Sal himself said this :D

Well I have to agre with Bob who agrees with Cheviot , however I have to plead guilty to owning 4 of them . Three for my collection one of the plain edge , one of the partially serrated , two of the fully serrated . One for the collection and one which I sometimes EDC . As Bob says it gets ooohs and aahs . I also enjoy the Gerber recoil for oohs and ahs . :D

P.S. Somebody ask Bob about that " BIG TOOL " that he was recently seen sporting around at his place of buisness ! ;) :p

No mention of any "SpydeRench II" at the Spyderco website, although I remain hopeful.

Only thing in the multi tool category was their new Byrd Harp: http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=206

I have seen this one advertised as being designed by Spyderco which is a bunch of hype . That design of multi tool is 60 to 80 years old . It is sometimes called a harp tool as they say in thier copy also somtimes called the Louis patent tool I think . Similar ones are called an ox bow tool . There are are ox bow tools that date into the
17th -18th century that I have seen .

I was also thinking that it was Sal that said something about it. I hope they do come out with a redesigned Spyderench because I'm really curious to see what it would look like.

Edit:

Found some info on it:
