Well has anyone heard of them? Do they stock quality product? I use to live down the street from Admiral steel so thats what I am use to.

I am in Orlando and some co works tell me that Alro has a scrap store where you buy everything buy the pound and he said its pretty cheap. Anyone have experience with this? Are there any steels that we as knife makers could use, and what sizes are available, or is it more of a crap shoot?

Any information on them would be appreciated. Here is a link of there site.

Nate, I have an account with Alro. They don't carry any good steels for knifemaking other than tool steels. Nick at Metrics has better pricing on that. So Alro is where I get my plain steel and aluminum. Thats about it.

If they have a scrap bin, you might get it cheap. If not, you have to have an account and buy in quantity. The best place I've found for smaller orders is http://www.metalexpress.net I get a lot from these guys.

I am told there are many scrap bins at the plus versions of the store and with that they are cheap. (not exactly sure what my co worker meant by cheap)

Its been about a year since I stopped in, but they have a distributor in town here and in the past it was just a minimum order of $100, and no mention of account. Things may have changed, and I hadn't asked about scrap sales or anything.

I have purchased a fair amount of steel from Alro. They will deliver it to my shop free. I buy O-1 and L-6 and mild steel from them. When you figure in shipping costs their prices are fairly good. So far I have only purchased full length bars i.e. 12' O-1 or 20' mild. I bet if you go to one of their drop/scrap places you may be able to get some good deals on O-1, L-6, A-2, 5160, 52100 but no 1095 or 1080.

Good luck

I live about 10mi from alro in Jackson, along with their plastics division. Good people to deal with..

yea sounds like its worth a shop ill report back when ever i find time to go...lol

The ALRO guys here in St. Pete don't have anything more complicated than O1, A2, etc. I buy my 1018 from them. The have that in any size you could possibly want. When I asked about more "exotic stuff like W2, 416 or L6, they said that the Orlando shop had a better selection. I would give them a try. You might get lucky.

well i live in orlando so that shouldnt be that bad...i was told the scrap area is a great place and worth the 15min trip...
