Just thought I would pass on some info I got from an audiologist. I went for a hearing test last Friday because my wife was accusing me of "selective hearing"
. Come to find out, I have a 30% hearing loss in both ears
. Not good news but finally a legitemate excuse
. During the exam the Doc asked what my hobbies were and when I mentioned that I was a knifemaker and was setting up a forge he cautioned me that I should use ear plugs and muffs when hammering on my anvil. Percussion noises are the most damaging and while general shop noise can be handled with ear plugs, muffs should me added when hammering to prevent loss or preserve whatever hearing is left. I have read many of the tutorials on knifemaking on this and other sites and don't recall any mention of hearing safety so I thought it would a good idea to pass this info on.
