Recommendation? Heart Rate Monitor

Anybody have a recommendation for a decent heart rate monitor? I've started doing a little light exercise again and want to keep track of my heart rate.

I don't need it for anything else, but it seem like the only ones locally available are the Fit Bits. The "Blaze" looks like a watch, so I could wear it all the time. That is like $150. I'd like to spend less since its pretty much just for the heart rate.

I don't want to wear a chest strap. I will accept somewhat less accuracy in exchange but want something that works on the wrist okay.

Thanks!

Without a chest strap, there isn't a whole lot to be done there. I had a charge HR, went through 2 bands on warranty. It looks like 150 is around the price point for decent ones with heart rate.

Do you mean that there aren't any accurate monitors without a chest strap or that my choices are limited\will have to pay more? I was looking at a couple Fit Bits that are worn on the wrists that have heart monitors. (I like getting gadget advice from someone with your name!)

Yeah, sorry wasn't clear there. The wrist worn ones have limited accuracy, and there are not that many on the market at this point. I'd personally go for one of the garmin units, but the fitbit ones will get the job done.

Thanks. I will look at the Garmin ones. We have an old Garmin GPS that has worked well for years, so I know that they make good stuff.

Wirecutter has ranked the garmins at the top for the past three gens, I don't see much point in going much above that until you get into dedicated gps/running watches, and at that point you would be wanting the level of detail given by the chest strap. They also do a good job of detailing the little things that might be important or not and who they will matter for, so its worth a read if you havn't already looked there.
