Howdy!
This may be a long post, we will see.
I just had to share with somebody, and who better to share with than a forum full of knife-knuts.

So, I work in a factory.
Knives are allowed and most of us carry.
Many of the folks there know that I'm a bit more into knives than most.
Most of em carry EAB folders, but a few times I've seen decent stuff.
Like a LM Wave, Skeletool, a stainless delica, a Gerber EAB, Benchmade Grip, and one of my buds carries a SAK 24/7.

Lately the place has been real busy.
I've noticed "what looks like" a Benchmade clip on the one guy a few times but never had the actual chance to ask about it.
So today as we were leaving, he sat next to me in the locker room.
So I asked finally.
"Hey is that a Benchmade knife you got?"
"I don't know what it is. I found it on the floor and figured I'd use it a bit. Its "xxxx"'s knife and I haven't seen him to give it back".
So he pulled it out and read the markings.
Right away I knew it was an AFCK.
"Yup" he said.
"Care if I check it out? I'm a knife-guy and I find it pretty interesting."
So he hands it to me.
Its a Mini AFCK with ATS-34.
I've never handled one before, nonetheless even seen one in person.
It had definitely been used......a lot..
It had the old logo with "bali-song" written through the butterfly and ATS-34 loud and proud on the blade.
The clip was very bent, loose, and missing screws.
The butterfly "coin" in the scales was missing.
The coating was wrecked and it looked like it was used to cut metals more than once.
The scales were caked with Grime, and the owners initials were hand-engraved in the blade.
:eek::barf:
BUT
The lockup was about 40% and was centered perfectly.

It really hurt to see.

I told him:
"These are rare as hell. Its a discontinued model that's pretty sought-after. If this wasn't so beat up it would be worth a couple hundred bucks."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah"
So I searched quick online and found a new one for $315 and showed him.
He almost couldn't believe it. He thought it was just some junky folder.

So half of my mind thinks its awesome that its being used so much, and the other half of me is taken aback and wishes to own it as a collector peice and try to clean it up.

Guess it doesn't matter, since I hardly ever see the real owner and doubt he'd just sell it to me out-of-the-blue.

Just had to share. :(

Nothing wrong with a well used, well loved, quality folder! Didn't wrench my heart at all! Made me smile.

I somewhat completely agree with you about it being so beat up but at the same time I'm sure the owner when he first got it didn't know how "rare" they would turn out to be. So on that note, I'm glad that it's provided someone with years of decent service. Love a well worn/used blade but beat up/abused is a different story

Thanks for sharing

Heart wrenching? No way.

That's heart warming.

Nowadays, anybody who picks up a Mini AFCK is going to put it in a drawer or safe never to be seen again. Because it's "rare as hell" and "sought after".

When they should be carried around and used (not abused, note) like it was meant to be. Because it's "well designed" and "quality".

That you don't see more of these old folders out in the world cuttin' stuff is the heart wrenching part.

Agreed!!! I love seeing a well loved, not abused, high end knife!
Same with guns. Both have tons of great stories!

Indeed that particular Mini AFCK is a sweetheart of a knife. This thread made me get mine out and clean and tune it a bit. Is this the knife you are talking about bladeboss?

I had the exact same knife when I was about 13 or 14. It's what really started my interest in nice folders.

It is the very knife that stole my heart when I was younger too, but I couldn't afford it. I picked up this one about 4 years ago and actually have carried it a lot. I can't make myself use it hard, as I have too may others better suited for hard use, such as my Small Micarta Sebbie and XM Spanto's, but I have and do carry and use it. It was just bathed in Breakfree CLP for the pics I just posted. I even put the original clip back on for the photos - the split arrow clip it typically wears shows the usage.

Very well put.

I carried a mini AFCK for several years, until I purchased a PM2 and retired it, it's probably still sitting in the bottom of my knife box. I even used the knife to cut a ruined tire off a hayrack, the rim was driven on after the tire went flat, with a full load of wood.

Great design, great user. Many other knives subjected to that level of use would have taken to pieces by now. Testament to a good tool. Now get your hands on it and clean it up. 😉

This.

If I could come up with a way to fit it with a tip-up clip, without permanently modifying the knife, I would carry it a LOT more. I just hate tip-down carry, no matter how much I try not to.

AFCK and mini are both great... I carried the larger AFCK original for 10yrs or so... still have it... bought when they were new...

Use the snot out of them! My large AFCK is about 1/4in shorter due to use and spa treatments...

Have fun!

Traumatized by the sight of a... Mangled body in a machine? No... A severed limb on a conveyor? No.. A hand sliced up by a bacon cutter? No..

It was this used knife man... It had SCRATCHES on it... Omg.. i'm there again...

That was my first real folder, I think it was in 1999. Paid way too much at a local store in but certainly got my money's worth out of it (meaning I beat the hell out of it). It's still very functional although the lock bar is just about worn out. It was my first of MANY Benchmades.

Before I was really into knives , but knew of a couple good brands. Some one just gave my brother a benchmade. At the time my brother said hey check out this benchmade someone gave me. I said cool he just gave it to you? He said yea, and i said that's pretty nice well used, but not really abused. Time went on and we made a bet on who was going to place better in the masters golf tournament. I told him I'd bet him my new $20 Kershaw I bought at Walmart ( dont remember model) for his somewhat roughshape benchmade. Well I won it and it sat in my nightstand for a couple years until we finally bit on the knife bug. By that time we were really in to knives, and had researched it for me and told me it was a benchmade afck that was worth allot more than we had originally thought. So I was like hell yea and look at it a little different now. I sent it to benchmade to have it sharpened, and they sharpened, tuned, and put new parkerized clip on it for me, and cleaned up its not that bad overall. I can't rember what the lock up is on it I haven't had it out in a while, but I can tell you it is still has very smooth action and extremley solid lockup. I just can't believe someone gave it to him.

I agree 100% I get a chuckle over the "post your best hard use knife" responses that show pristine blades. I'll take a user over a safe queen anytime!

I carried and used mine.

I doubt if a new one would be worth the price quoted. Used ones, especially well used, would be pretty low in value.

Glad I used the crap out of mine, otherwise would have never had the pleasure.
