About a week ago, I received a wonderful Vic Electrician from greg c! In the middle of a recent thread on Alox SAKs, I happened to mention that my best whittling blade was the small blade on a Tinker, and Greg asked if I'd ever tried the sheepsfoot blade on an Electrician, which I hadn't. Before you know it, out of the blue, he emailed me, requesting my mailing address and offering me the Electrician. I can't believe his generosity! I think the knife is beautiful, and it's my first Alox.

(And it turns out, Greg's timing was also amazing. For those of you who are old enough to know what I'm talking about, the knife happened to arrive on the day before I had a colonscopy scheduled, and the "prep" of the day before is infinitely less pleasant than the procedure itself. But the knife's arrival made that day much easier to endure! Also, as a life-long fan of the Detroit Tigers, I would have found that weekend to be a real drag, since the Tigers were swept in the first round of the playoffs, but with a "silver bullet" in my pocket and the thought of Greg's generosity in my mind, life seemed much brighter :D)

Here are a few photos; I apologize for my lack of photographic skills. (Does anyone remember if there's ever been a thread with photography hints for us amateurs? Not looking for anything real technical, just some hints on improving the quality of my knife photography using my wife's point-an-shoot digital camera - Canon PowerShot SX110).

It's already fall in Michigan:

Here's the Electrician with it's new home:

I had a little pack of SAKs, of whom the Tinker was king, but here's a shot of them paying homage to the new Leader of the Pack:

Thanks again, Greg, for your generous gift!

GT, congrats on one of the best ALOX SAKS out there:thumbup:

I've been at "the day before" scenerio:o

Sorry bout your Tigers as I'm an avid sports fan and suffer with you when your invested in a team;)

In regards to picture skills, I'd say you have NOTHING to worry about...great pictures:thumbup:

Greg C...a very nice gift/gesture on your part:thumbup:

I never tire of being a witness to such kind acts:thumbup::cool:

Nice knife and a great gesture from Greg.

Your pics seem fine to me, a fellow amateur, but you can always fiddle with exposure and white balance settings to find the best match for the situation.

Great gesture by Greg. I love reading these threads. You made that knife look great. In my professional opinion the best way to make it look better would be to use the heck out of it and then take some pictures when it's nice and broken in. :D

Gary it's really great to come home from work and see such a kind post.

I'm not surprised given the wonderful letter you sent along with the 1929 wheat penny, that was the nicest letter I've received in a long time.

My three year old and I like your first picture best, she get really excited and yelled "WOW that's a REALLY BIG apple!" My boy just stumbles around trying to smash things, so I can't give you his opinion on the shots. :)

As I said before I hope that knife serves you well and I'm going to start practicing in the hopes that someday we can compare ball and cage projects!

Greg

Thanks for the responses, everyone!

Paul and glassjaw: I especially appreciate your empathy for my "trials" that made the arrival of the knife so timely.;)

Cory: I can't turn down free professional advice, so I plan to use the Electrician "like a rented mule". :D One photo showed the knife with a pocket sheath I kept it in for a couple of days, but I've decided that one major advantage of Alox is it can take a beating (it's not delicate bone or anything), so it's now naked in RFP with my keys. That has the added advantage that I can reach in there and feel the texture, which I really like (even if I'm getting weird looks from folks who wonder why I suddenly always have a hand in my pocket).

Nate: Thanks for the positive comments on my photography. I wish I could notice through the viewfinder all of the undesirable elements I discover in the finished shot! I'm really bugged that I can find a reflection of myself and/or the camera in almost every knife photo I take.:(

Greg, I'm glad your daughter appreciated the apple! That's one of my wife's precious Honey Crisps that I took without permission, so mum's the word. I think I'm going to engrave something like "greg c --> GT" on the little smooth plate on the pile side of the knife, just to make sure I never forget where it came from. And I'll be happy to compare ball-and-cage projects someday, but you'll have to be patient; how about maybe around your daughter's wedding day?

I find it difficult to avoid those reflections when shooting macro from straight above in a casual setup. Even with a preview screen it's easy to focus on everything else about the picture and only later realize that you or your camera lens is sitting right there in a blade or a bolster. Still, I'll usually take that over a hard glare that throws off the whole image.

Nice gesture, lots of good folks around here.
Your photos are very good, and they'll get even better in time, as you are already trying to improve them.

Very nice, good work, Greg!

The Electrician is my 2nd favorite alox model, second only to the Pioneer. Good stuff!

Wonderful gift and I understand how things like this can pull you through!

Well done, Greg!!
