Heat and Temper on a Busse

This is probably a really dumb question, and I think I know the answer; but I had to double check, just to be certain.

I left a Meaner Street in my car when I went on a hike (shifted to a Game Warden since it was a state park); and, of course, in the summer sun the interior of the car got pretty hot. A friend of mine picked up my Meaner when we got back to the car; and he noticed that the blade and G10 handles were very warm. He commented that he thought it would affect the temper. I replied that it couldn't possibly affect the temper on a quality knife...especially in light of the fact that he was able to hold it without a burn, so it couldn't have gotten that hot. Still, I did want to check, because I'm not a metalurgist.

So, is that possible? I know you don't want to overheat a knife when you grind or mechanically sharpen it; but can it really get that hot inside a vehicle, to the point where it could affect the temper?

Thanks, guys! Like I said, I'm probably being silly; but it never hurts to check.

no problem at all, the handles would melt off before the temper would be effected

Your fine it cant get hot enough in your car to effect the knife. I keep many knives in my car year round, and in Chicago that means they see extreme cold and heat (sometimes both in the same day) :D.

Previous discussions have yielded that 900 degrees is the temp that would begin to affect the temper.

We really need to add this question to the FAQ sticky.

I ***think*** somebody has mentioned that it would take about 900 F to damage the temper of INFI. A dishwasher and inside a car is not going to be even close. Micarta is also very resiliant.

As for INFI and temperature extremes, it is amazing. INFI is tempered at nearly 950 degrees. It does not begin to lose any significant hardness until it is held above 1050 degrees for a considerable amount of time. I have to believe that it would need to be extremely mishandled in order to do any noticeable damage.

Most of the simpler high carbon steels (of which INFI is NOT a member) can be drawn down in temper in a matter of seconds if the temperature hits above 500 - 800 degrees.

Skunk killed micarta in the oven, but that was somewhere in the 250 degree range, I think.

the dashboard of your car can occasionally get to really high temps, as high as 200 degree's F in area's like the arizona desert, where ambient temps can get as high as 117 during summer. at those temperatures, you will warp any kydex sheath if left during an extended period of time, and possibly loosen some glues.

with some of the simpler carbon steels, you can start to effect the temper at 300 degree's plus, but you shouldn't effect them at 175 or below. though this is a very uneducated opinion.

I'd say your biggest worry is gonna be your sheath rather then your blade. nothing on a busse should have a hard time with dashboard temps, even in the hottest area's of the world. your dashboard will melt before the knife itself is negatively effected.

do not believe these guys! they haven't a clue. send it to me immediately for my proprietary testing process. i'll email you my addy.

too funny.

we got two seasons in Chicago. Winter and winter's coming....:D

Yes, I am an actual physicist. And I 'second' the Skunk's sage comment.

You can't get enough heat from your car to affect the temper. Well, without igniting the gas tank ... or some crazy stuff like that!!

OP beat me to the punch. I was going to say that the only way the temper could be affected would be if the care were on fire.

My favourite question like this was, "I left my knife in my pocket and it went through the washer and dryer. Will that affect the temper?"

My favourite answer was, "As long as the dryer isn't incinerating your clothes, it should be fine."
