can it be done without messing up the temper
i had tempered some at 1000 so i dont see how less then that could hurt it but im asking first
i might have to do it on a test bar first but if i dont have to i dont want to my bar stock did not come cheap

As long as you stay well below the tempering temperature, the hardness won't be affected.

No problem , the colors you want are well below 1000F.
