Hi there, this may be the wrong place to post the question, but I didn’t see a thread…

I’m looking at buying a Vulcan a – 550 muffle furnace high temp oven but don’t know if it is adequate. It’s an older model I believe (no digital) but goes up to 900 C. Is that sufficient? About 1650 Fahrenheit I believe? Most of my knives are baking in about 1500 before I quench anyway (according to my gun). Any thoughts? Thank you so much and again sorry if this is not the place to post this.

If the price is so low they are giving it away then It's better than nothing but you'll be limited to carbon steels.

The capacity is also a big factor, also do you have a 240v outlet?

Depending on the price, you might want to look into something else.

I recommend Even Heat Furnaces
Especially since you are in the USA.

Thanks, I think I may be able to pick it up for 50 bucks so that’ll be worth it and not too expensive a mistake if that’s what it ends up being.

The capacity is limited as I would only be able to fit a 13 inch (blade and tang) at a diagonal. It would be good for smaller knives of course.

I have 240 and three phase in my garage so that’s not a problem. This may be quite ignorant on my part, but why am I limited to carbon steel?

Oh, and thanks so much for replying! I really appreciate this forum

Wow! Three-phase in your garage ... you are one lucky fellow. Short of a commercial building, few people have access to 3-Ph.
That is why we use expensive VFDs. You will be able to run all your grinders and rotary equipment on 3-Ph with a 3-Ph to 3-Ph VFD. (those are often very cheap).

I built a phase converter. My idle is 10hp so yeah more than enough for what I’m doing. Plus the 3ph motors are typically less expensive too.

Ok, that makes sense. Yes, a large 3-ph motor can be converted to a phase converter and run your other 3-ph motors on the tools.
