Will heat spots ( slight blueing of the metal when grinding ) have any adverse affects on the blade when it is heat treated.

I am useing ATS34 but would like to know about tool steel (01,D2) as well.

Thanks Jamie.

Hi Mark,

Grinding till blue before HT.

I only stock remove at this stage but sometimes I get a small blue heat spot when the blade edge is getting to the finnished thickness.

I don't HT myself and do relize that the blade does get quite hot to harden it before tempering. I was just interested to know if these spots would affect the edge after HT.

Thanks again Jamie.

Leaning into the blade when grinding before heat-treating will not harm anything. After HT it will soften the hardness in those spots. I use to grind allot of ATS 34 and got my blades red hot from using worn out belts. You will be surprised how fast metal comes off at that temperature! You can rough out a blade in just a few minutes.

Don't be cheap like Bruce ! replace your belts once in a while. The only problem you might have if you've really heated it and unevenly is warpage . That can be eliminated by stress relieving at ~ 1000F before HT. ...After HT it's a different problem . It's very easy to overheat the edge especially the tip .I've seen this on knives I've owned.

i'm with mete on this. i have noticed on blades with little bits of blue on the edge prior to Ht they tend to warp right there when you Ht them. just use some fresh belts, you get a nicer more even finish in a shorten ammount of time when using fresh belts anyway:)
