HEAT training knife

Hi everyone,

I've just learned today that I will be sent for a HEAT training in the UK in December. The knife is not included in the list of items to bring but I think it would be silly not to bring one considering the content of the course (I must precise that I am not taking the knife for self defense purposes but more for utility/survival).

I am not really aware of the laws in the UK regarding knives so I will probably have to check that to make sure I am not carrying anything illegal.

I have some folders including a Syperco Military and an Emerson A-100 that could probably do the job, or a Leatherman Wave and I also have some small fixed blades such as a Swamprat Rodent Solution but the training could be a good excuse for a new purchase :D

Any suggestions from people who went through this kind of trainings?

Thanks in advance!

If a knife "...is not included in the list of items to bring...," don't you think that's for a reason? I can imagine that HEAT (whatever that is) would forget to tell you to bring a knife along. You don't bring your own gun when you join the Army.

IF they expected you to bring a knife....I'd say bring the Wave.

I get your point but I am usually carrying a small EDC, a lighter, a small torch light, etc... in case :edited: something happens. These items are not included either in the list of things to bring but in a bad situation I would carry them with me so why not bringing them with me? I might contact the organizers of the course to see what they think.

Please keep the suggestions coming :)

Read all knife laws regarding the UK thoroughly. I'm pretty sure all the knives you mentioned would be illegal with their nonsensical laws.

You're the one who needs to read the laws. Fixed blades, (and locking folders, which are indistinguishable from each other in the UK, legally speaking,) are fine if you have a valid reason to carry them. I'd think that HEAT would qualify.

However, Marcinek has a good point. Make sure that a knife or multitool is allowed before you bring one. Wouldn't want to get it confiscated.

It may, but I would still be careful with any knife. The way I interpret the law (after a quick Google search) is that after you're arrested the court will decide if your reason is valid or not. So even if your reason is valid you might get pinched by a LEO based on their interpretation of your 'valid reason.' But that's just my interpretation and I'm no lawyer. Point is, tread lightly.

Anyways, if I were to take a knife to something like you describe it would probably be a fixed blade. But like everyone else said, check with the organizers and see that it's allowed before you take anything.
