How do I heat treat 4140? I'm making blade stops so tempering is not needed, but I don't know whether to water, oil or air quench(to be honest, I don't know if I fully understand how to air quench). I checked the archives(I'm learning), but found nothing to help. By the way, getting a new grinder today. Yaaaayyyyy!!! Thanks.

I made a knife out of 4140 once and that was one tough blade!!!
It wasn't all that hard, but would take and hold a good edge for a reasonable amount of time. It was also easy to sharpen as well.
I had it heat treated at the place I was working at the time. They used oil as well to heat treat it.

The reason I knew it was tough is because I gave it to my son and he never could tear it up.
He finally passed it on to a good friend.
I bet its still hanging in there some where doing the job it was meant to do.
