Has anyone used the heat treating service at Buck since Paul Bos retired? I have always used him with excellent results but I am a bit concerned now that he is no longer there.

When it first came out that he was retiring, this concern was brought up and I believe he stated that he was training someone to take over for him. I am sure they will be just as good as him.

Paul's replacement is another Paul who has been with him for 10 years. Probably already been working on your stuff.... I am not worried about the transition, not enough to send my stuff to someone I have never used before

i will be sending my CPM 154 CM there with no worries, I read his statement about his assistant taking over and I have no worries

I think the new guy has been doing the job under Paul's supervision for some time.

I will continue to use them.

Take care

Charles

I talked to Paul at some length at the Blade Show. He assured me that it would be "Business as Usual". He is confident that his replacement will continue to serve the knifemaking community.

After talking to Paul on the phone I'm not worried. I just sent 72 blanks to him about 2 weeks ago.

All,
Thanks for your responses. I am about to send in a fairly large batch and it sounds like I should have nothing to worry about.

Guys: Things seem to be going well , I have been in touch with Paul Farner , we talk at least once a week , His E-Mail is pfarner@buckknives.com, Ph# is 208-262-0500 ext 211. My Email is still paulbos@buckknives.com, My new Ph# is 928-237-1656. If you have any problems please give me a call. Paul Bos heat treating is still a big part of my life, Ill never let go 100%. Thank You Paul.

just curious what does heat treating generally cost? I'm seriously considering knife making myself..

does it depend on steel, quantity?

Rob

where are you all sending the blanks and how much does this usually cost?
do you have to send a certain amount of blanks?

Bumped just because this question comes up from time to time. All the best to you and the fine company that bears your name, Mr. Bos!

I just got some blades back from Paul Bos heat treating. I can't tell any difference in these blades and those that have been heat treated in the past.
The first rate heat treating at Paul Bos continues. Of that I am very glad.

Cause I was looking for the info and someone else might need it too.

I have used Paul Bos for small orders for a few years now. I started using him because I met him and I liked him. I continued using him because I appreciated the attention he put into jobs of only 2-3 blades. I have been slow lately and have not sent anything since he retired. If he says Farner is good to go then I have no further questions.

I have dealt with Mr. Farner several times and talked with him on the phone a couple of times. Everything I got back was first class, just as when Bos was there.

Robert

Hi Paul,

Maybe this isn't an issue at all but would the Flaming "Bos" Insignia remain?

I can say one thing,I am going back to Bos Ht...was using peters ht,sent a batch of knives in got a call they where done and I ask the price I almost fell over,it was double of what paul charges,I called them back after I thought about it,all the blades where D2 three where 154cm....I ask what the price was so high they charged me 27 dollars per blade for the 154 cm blades, that is 76 dollars for 3 blades and 150 for the batch of d2 blades pauls is 85 dollars and different steel knife in a batch is 10 dollars...i will never use peters ht again

Four year old thread. Also, complaints should be in The Good, Bad, Ugly, or in Whine and Cheese.
