Finally got a chance to do some heat-treating (since having moved my shop) and I'm happy to say it is working great!

I just roll it out, fire it up and away it goes.

I'll post up some pics tomorrow....when I do more!

I managed to heat-treat 37 blades in all today....whew!

And I've got another 48 to do tomorrow.....

Hmmm.....the Blade Show must be right around the corner....:o

:D

And now for some pics...:D

Blades!!!

This is my Heat-Treat setup...:D

My oven is a Paragan KM-14D

The reason I got this is I don't really need one longer than 14 inches (16" corner to corner)....and this one runs on 110v.

Plus, Paragon ovens are built like a TANK!

In the front right of the cart is my quench tank - an old ammo cannister filled with Brownell's Tough Quench.... a fast quench that is good for 1095, but won't warp/crack it (like water/brine/Parks#50). The vertical metal tank you can kinda see on the right has Parks#50 in it....I only use that for 5160.

On the bottom shelf of the cart is my tempering oven. Amazingly, this $20 oven holds it's temperature great....I've tested it several times and the temp you set it to on the dial is exactly what you get inside. I lucked out!

And off to my immediate left is this vise set up with aluminum quench plates...resting on a filing cabinet.

I attached a bottom plate so that I could quickly put blade in/out, without worrying about them dropping down.

Works great for straightening blades. I run everything through it, right after quenching...when the steel is still above 400F and "movable".

Well, there ya go. Let me know what you think!

It's really cool to see the process of creating the great blades you make.

I'm planning on grinding out a few blades for myself this summer vacation and I'm getting all sorts of ideas and tips just from looking and reading your posts. Thanks.

By the way, what's that knife on the far left of the kiln pic? The one with the drilled out handle and finger grooves.

That one was a junker..now used for clean-up. :D

What are those blades indeed!!!!?!?

Check 'em out. ;)

BushKits!

Decided to make a few in 1095....Blade Show only. ;)

Dan

So those plates cool the steel straight, and it stays straight?

Yes - it's not really needed with O1...I've only ever had really one or two blades bend with O1. With 1095, now....it's a necessity...especially since I use 1/8" and 3/32" a lot.

Just have to straighten it between 1000F and 400F....once it's below that it's no longer "in motion". It's still maleable, but you're more likely to crack it.

So, I quench it "just enough" and then put it right into the vise. Helps to know your charts/temps/times just right for each steel (and adjust for it's thickness).

Ewwwww - Yuck - those blades are all rusty and stuff....

You don't SELL them like that do you?

;)

What is the ammo can for Dan? In case you need to load up and protect your steel hoard from Bladeforum Marauders?! ;)
