I just pulled a few knives out of the oven after tempering and one of them has a very nice camo pattern similar to a case hardened finish. I am tempted to leave the finish on the blade without grinding it off because it is so unique. Has anyone ever tried this? Is the finish durable?

I tried it once, left the oxide on it and used it for a worker, the finish is not durable at all and after about 3 months really looked like warmed over crap.I then sanded the blade.UMMV

I've never had to pattern shown in the picture. I get a more even overall coloration. I've left it on some blades but in my opinion it is only effective on knives that you want to look old. If you plan to put a mustard finish on a blade then the tempering coloring may be another option.
