Hello All,

Sorry about the alarmist title:eek: But I do have a rush request to HT some stainless for a good friend. I have the Evenheat, but no foil (just a lowly forger).

I am just wondering where I can order some good SS foil, along with the appropriate rolling/crimping tools?

Thanks a bunch,

John

Foil is about .002 thick and you do not need rolling or crimping tools to work it. Enco usually has it on sale.

Model #326-1512
Low Price: $42.94 ea

When you make the envelope for the blade double fold the edges and put a small piece of paper in with the blade to burn up any oxygen in the envelope. You will have an oxygen free atmosphere with little or no scale.

John, there are several alloys of SS foil put there that are good to different temps. 309SS is the 2100F stuff IIRC, 321 is lower. If you mention your aus. temp it may help. One of the best names in foil is Ticronic. A plain old spoon works well to replace the "roller" to crimp down the edges. Make the envelope big enough to fold over twice. Folding technique, Rashid's plier suggestion looks pretty good. I don't think I've ever avoided drawing blood when I wrap a blade.:o

i know im at aout 1 in 4 blade wraps cut me
think i need to get some of those steel mesh gloves fro wraping blades

Thanks a bunch guys.

One more question: It turns out the urgent guy want a bar of 440C hardened, not a blade. I suppose he will grind the blade from the hardened bar. I only eyeballed the bar but it looks to about 12" x 1.25" x 3/16". In this one case can I get away with no foil, on the assumption that he will be grinding off all decarb? Also, should I plate quench to assure through hardening?

Thanks again,

John

Thanks,

John

It'll come out with bad scale and maybe pits, John. Run a test tab first to see for yourself. You can get by with either foil at 440C temps. Don Robinson was selling some in smallish sections, too.

Plate quench is good.

Thanks Mike. If I need to order, I may as well get a decent amount of the good stuff. I have a bunch of S30V and a bit of S3V for my own use that I'll get around to sooner or later.

John
