Heat Treat for 3V?

Peter: Data as follows, Austinize @ 1875 -2000 deg. F ,Hold at temp for 30 min. Air or interrupted oil quench to about 1000 deg. F.then air cool. I suggest air quench. Air quenched from 1950, temper at 950 will give you a R\C of about 61. 3 temper min. You can do a sub-zero after first temper. Two hrs. per temper. Paul.

Thanks Paul! Dang that temper is higher than I anticipated...but that's OK. Thanks for the professional info. :)

BTW, If I harden S30V at 1950F for 20 minutes then temper at 400 for two hours, followed by two more tempering sessions at 500 for two hours each, what would my approximate rockwell end up being? Is that a legitimate schedule to follow in your opinion? Thanks.

Peter:When I tempered S-30V @ 400 it came out R\C-59-60. Ed at Crucible said they have done quite a few tests on it , They say to temper it between 600 and 700, so ive been doing everything for my customers @ 650 double temper with a cryo at - 280 for 8 hrs. I come up with a 59- 59.5 R\C. Paul.

Interesting thread guys, thanks. I just purchased a new paragon furnace and will print this thread and put it into the book (3 hole binder) I just started to keep on how to treat different steels.

Bill: would be glade to help any time i can, I get a lot of feed back from my customers on all the new stuf on how well it works or if it dont. Paul.

Plain ol Bill:
Don't forget to calibrate that new Paragon with some ceramic cones from your local ceramics place. You may need to tweak the austenitizing temps somewhat based on your findings.
