Could somebody please give me detailed instructions on the heat treat for a filleting knife made from 1/16X1 ats34. I will be doing the heat treat in a pottery kiln at home. What do you recommend for the handle. I am knew at this so please don't get fancy.
Thanks
Steve

steve, first, most stainless blades are cryo tempered to reduce internal stress, and does your kilm have a temperature readout? if not i would suggest sending it to rob simonich, it's about $8-10 per blade. he heat treats all blades on wednesday. he heat treated my bowie. i did a cutting test, i cut through a 2x4, and cut up random wooden objects, the end rresult was an extremely sharp edge with no rolled edges, chips or flat spots.

For the handle I would suggest a canvas or linen micarta finished to a 220-320 grit. It will provide a great grip when wet. My favorite fishing knife has a canvas micarta handle and small finger grooves. If you are doing stream-side cleaning I also suggest a thong hole.
