My SOG Trident is just plain refusing to hold it's edge for any length of time and I am wondering if a bad heat treat could be to blame? Other than I suppose bad sharpening leading to a wire edge could be part of it.

After you sharpen your knife, try to strop it to break off any "wire edge" that can form. Then, test your knife to see how long it lasts.

Bill...

You can strop a blade on the cardboard back of a notepad or on an old leather belt. That's actually what I use. I have one hanging in the garage. IIRC, someone on the boards here uses glass, like a desktop glass.

Just use a light touch and a slightly steeper angle than the one you use for sharpening. Draw away from the cutting edge rather than into it, and raise the blade off the strop before you stop the stroke so you don't round the edge
