does anyone have comments unguarding the evenheat vs the paragon kilns. there is about a $200 price difference. is it worth paying the addition. how does the evenheat hold up.
thanks
ron

I have the Evenheat with Rampmaster digital control. Either one would be a fine oven but I would recommend a digital controller on either of them. I bought an 18" and while there is plenty of room to make most every size knife I make it would be nice to have the 24" when I want to make a really big one.

I bought a 18" evenheat with the rampmaster and am very happy with it..Im sure the paragon is a great oven but I really like the evenheat.

I have a 22.5 Evenheat Rampmaster 2. I've used it about 4/5 years with only minor problems with the coil retainers. I hear of more problems with Paragon than Evenheat, but others milage may vary..

After read around & eval between paragon & evenheat. This morning, I sent a couple request-for-quote on an Evenheat 18 KO (temperature up to 2350F). Is it overkill? whereas KF or KH better (can ht up to 2150F)? I've KO in mind because of concern for long term filement fatique, just to make sure the firing temperature won't fade with time.

Are the filaments different in the KOs? I always thought there was just more insulation...

You're right, it was just additional 0.5" thickness different between KO & KF. My newb mistake, when I saw 2 different replacement skus for the 2 model, I thought the KO burns (higher resistance) hotter.
Thanks.

I guess they'd have to program the controllers a little differently.

If buying new, might be tempted to go for the thicker as I suspect it would heat up the shop less than the one I have, and might be more efficient (cost wise) on days where it's on for a long time.

Ask yourself what steel you will be heat treating above 2000F .... I suspect you will come up blank. Few heat treaters ever pass 1950F. CPM-M4 is the only steel that comes to mind, and that really needs 2050F. The CPM-super steels ( 30,60,90) go from 1950 to 2050F.

I recently purchased an 18" EvenHeat Kiln with Rampmaster lll controller. I could no be happier with my choice. It is very high quality, super easy to use, and the results it produces are excellent. I purchased mine from Mackilns. You will NOT find a lower price anywhere! AND he offers FREE SHIPPING. Something you will definitely not find anywhere!!

There are few pm steels I like to tinker with temperature past 2150F and possibly decarb at 2300F. But you are right, bulk of the time 2050F and below would fullfil 99% of ht need.

THANKS! Yeah save over $100 on shipping, that's nice. Will use that money to buy accessories. Actually Usaknifemaker price for Evenheat KF/KO (with ramp master) is lower than Mackilns by a few dollars.

Mackilns must have just upped their prices a bit? I paid under a grand to my door? Still a great deal with free shipping!! The shipping to me was going to be $155 here in NY. It paid for my quench oil and a turkey roaster to put it in!!

i don't have either but glad i opened this for the source, I have a 24" sugarcreek and will be looking for another to expedite production when I get to that level.. and will be buying the evenheat 18 :D

btw, the site had a price increase as of 3/1

I had purchased a Sugarcreek 24" oven. Before I even got it fired up they went out of business. I sold it new on craigslist and purchased the evenheat. I had wanted the evenheat to begin with but thought I would save a few $$. The Evenheat is SO simple to use and made SO much better. I can not recommend them enough.

jll346,
Im assuming you have already received your oven . Were you satisfied with their service, delivery as expected. etc. Just wanted to check before i ordered one from them.

thanks
Jerry

I have known the owners of Evenheat for many years. They make a fine product.

We recently upgraded all of our KM-series knifemaking furnaces to 2350F--just in case someone wants to heat treat the higher temperature steels. We also added a line of furnaces called the Xpress-KM series. The only difference between the Xpress-KM and the standard KM series is the controller.

Sincerely,

100000% satisfied. I spoke with the owner. His name is Marvin. The oven itself is directly shipped from the Evenheat factory. They immediately sent me all the shipping and tracking info. Arrived on a nice small pallet packed to the extreme. I could not have had a better transaction!!

Thanks Jll346, I went with your recommendation. This morning I called Mackilns and then placed an online order for a Evenheat 18KO w/ Rampmaster. I decided not to get a door on/off switch at this time, will add later if needed.

With a few scarps of sheet metal, and a microswitch, adding the door switch is very easy.
The Normally-Open microswitch is wired in the DC+ line to the SSR from the PID.
Close the door - close the circuit ...... Everything runs as normal.
Open the door - open the circuit ...... This disables the DC control power to the SSR, thus making the coils de-energized.
