Heat treat Process

I am a huge crk fan. The sebenza and Nyala are my edc blades. Little else gets a chance. I've had my sebenza for around 8 years. Never had a problem from the s30v, and it has been through the manual labor ringer. The s35vn Nyala is now with me all the time. For a year+ I've carried it replacing the sebenza as my work knife. All this said, I was wondering about the heat treat/ quench process crk uses. I know he runs it a bit softer than Spartan does. I know how they do theirs, and it is wonderful. I use them in the field/camp craft. Their s30v is awesome. Bar none favorite 2 companies, just won't to know more about them.

Good question. I imagine that Crucible does the hardening of the steel. I did a quick search for videos. But no luck.

I'm sure crucible doesn't do it for them. I would think that crk does all there own heat treats. Do they cryo-quench anywhere close to what Spartan does?

I recall someone saying the heat treat is done offsite, perhaps by a service provider. I think it's mentioned in the BHQ video that the blades "come back from heat treat" and that was at some point defined on this forum, but I can't remember where or what thread.

I also think we need to move on from referencing "he" or "him" when we discuss CRK. My understanding is Chris Reeve is retired, so it's really a company of people we are talking about, that makes hundreds of knives a day, not Chris sitting over an annealing furnace or something. Not to nit-pick, but clearly it is no longer the choices and efforts of just one guy making CRK what it is. If there is accolades or blame, they need to be spread a little wider.

Did not know he was retired. If he isn't retired I would think that he still has say so on how things are done. And kudos to all the people that do work there, continuing to produce quality knives.

Aceco in Boise does their heat treating.

FYI since mid 2013 they have been running the folders a little harder (59-60).

As per the CRK home page
"2015 also saw the withdrawal of Chris from daily operations into semi-retirement; he continues to contribute to design and consulting."

Still off topic, but does anyone know who is running the daily operations-just curious as to who it might be.
I think Chris will be designing until they put him under(hopefully a long time from now), it is what he does.

Chris' son and Anne are running the place I believe. Yeah, this should have is own thread.
