Hi there, fairly new to knife making and heat treating. I am currently making a large camp/chopper knife. I have done one side of the bevel down to the centre of the blade and the other down so that it is around 1.5mm thick on the edge. The spine is 8mm thick. If I bring the edge to a point, will I have problems when it comes to heat treating it, or should I heat treat now and bring the edge down after?
Cheers.

Not sure about the type of steel you're working with, but HT on a finely finished edge can cause problems. Typically, leave the edge at .5mm or more, then grind it carefully after HT is done. If it's too thin, you can end up with a wavy "potato chip" for the edge from distortion. After HT, be careful not to heat the edge too much. Have a bucket of water handy to keep things cool as you work. Best of luck!

ok that helps a lot thank, I think that will be my best bet. cheers

What noseoil said.

Also, 8mm is a really thick blade. Half that thickness makes a good camp chopper/utility blade.
