heat treat question

I noticed that some people put a pipe in their forge and place the blade inside of it while heat treating, what is the purpose of the pipe? I assume it is to prevent hot spots???? thanks for the help as always..

Better not to put the blade directly in the blast. You'll get a more even heat with the pipe.

Use a black iron or stainless pipe,not galvanized!
