hey everyone! I’m a new member and new knife maker. I have some questions about heat treating 420ss. I got a few blanks from a medical machine shop I worked in and I wanted to see what it was like to forge them. I made a test knife out of one and heat treated it in charcoal and quenched in vegetable oil. The blade strength was way better than expected! I’ve always been told there are more complicated ways of heat treating stainless so I’m kinda surprised. Does This mean it’s possible to use charcoal on 420? Or was it just a one time success?
