Does anyone live in Canada and still do heat treating on Stainless in small batches? (1-3 knives)
Brian Lyttle doesn't do stainless anymore and he was pretty much the only person I could find that might. :(

Even better yet does anyone know of a home remedy that doesn't involve me going out and spending $1000+ on an oven?

TIA Steve.

Although he doesn't do he treating himself Jeff Diotte of Downie Knives (located in Ontario) will handle this for you. People send him blades which he puts together with other people's small batches and sends out for heat treating to Allied Heat Treat. They will also cryogentically temper blades if requested.

Jeff's number is 519-978-9387. He's a good guy to deal with if you've never bought from him before.

Take a look around in bladeforums for a thread about building your own heat treat oven, it gives good instruction and would definitely be much less than $1000 I would think. It is fairly recent and might be listed in this subforum if you check back a couple of weeks.

Hope this helps,
Sean

Thanks Sean, I was trying to get ahold of Jeff for a while now, he never answers the phone lol
Don Bell told me he might be gone to a show for a little while.

I emailed Peter Wile to see if he could do it for me, so I'm waiting on Peter being that he only lives a couple hours away it would likely be cheaper.

If Peter can't do it then I'll keep trying to get ahold of Jeff. Does he have a web site anymore?

Thanks again. :)

and about the self-built oven, I might be able to swing it if I could built one for a couple hundred bucks...

someday I'll win the loto! :D

That's the oven thread I was talking about, it looks good.

The only show Jeff mentioned to me was the CKG show that happened last weekend. Sometimes he can be tough to get a hold of but keep trying. I think he charges $8CDN for heat treat and Cryo per blade. He just does it to help makers out, wouldn't be making much of anything at that price.

I'd love to make or buy an oven some day but I'm in the same boat as you by the sounds of it.

Sean

$8?? wow that's cheap!

I'd love to build my own furnace, that would be a great little thing to have for more than just knives.
How hard is it to find the supplies? anyone check into it yet?

George I'll keep trying Jeff until I'm ready to HT, if I can't get ahold of him I'll email you, if you're sure you don't mind doing it. Just name your price ahead of time so I can gather the change :D :D ;)

Thanks for all the helpful replies guys!

Before you invest a few C-notes in a home built oven - check out what it takes to PROPERLY heat treat stainless. To do it withour extreme oxidation you will need to have a way of keeping the oxygen out - either wrapping in stainless foil or a gas shielded oven. You will need EXACT temperature control to within 20 degrees at the 2000 -2100 degree range. You will need a dewar for the liquid nitrogen to cryo the blades after HT (and the LN to fill it).A few hundred bucks will not make a rig to do stainless. You can have a lot of blades done by a pro for a fraction of the cost of such an oven.D'Alton Holder is my favorite HT guy.

George: I'm assuming that Jeff sends the blades to the same place you're talking about?
what kind of treating is it? is it a bath or just an oven?
I took the first blade down pretty thin on the grind because I was planning on the high temp salt bath, I'm kind of worrying about warping with the oven...

I've been talking to Peter Wile and he may be able to do it for me, which would be great because I can just drive to his place, but then he reminded me about warping.
