Need some recommendations on how to heat treat some lockback folder parts made of A-2 steel. I'll be hardening a blade and lockbar and both are 1/8 thick. I have access to a heat treat furnace at work and can wrap the parts in stainless foil to prevent decarb, etc. What I need to know is the temperatures for hardening, hold time at temperature for these small parts, and anealing temperature for whatever would be the recommended hardness. The blade and lockbar will be full 1/8 thickness as I'll grind it after heat treat. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

Art: Hardening temp for A-2 is 1700-1800 deg. F. Hold for aprox. 20 min. @ temp.Rapid air quench. As quench hardness aprox. R\C-63-65. Temper @400 deg. f. 60\62. 500 deg. f. for 59\60. These tempering tempretures may very depending what it comes out of quench at. You may sub-zero this material for better ducttility if you wish, but do it between tempers. Multiple tempers for best results. Hope this helps you out. Paul.

Just send the stuff to Paul. He is awesome! Paul, do you HT CPM 3v, 440V or 420V? I am thinking of making a kitchen knife out of one of those steels and was wondering how much they would be because you mentioned an additional fee for those. One will be 11" OAL santoku, flat ground, and maybe a small 7" overall neck knife. Thanks!

Taz: Yes I do those steels. For 2 blades it would be $15.00 each plus shipping and handling. Or $70.00 min. will do up to 20 blades. Paul.

Thanks, Paul! I will hopefully be sending you those 2 blades after turkey day if i get my grizzly fixed and some steel!

Many thanks for the info Paul. One more question. Will a fan do for the rapid air quench or what else would you reccommend?
