heat treating BG42 and ATS34

hi guys i have a few questions about these steels.

when heat treating them is it necessary to do it in an inert or oxygen free atmosphere?

should all grinding work on the blades be done before heat treatment or after?

ps what is the general consensus about these if i want to make a large knife (+ 6inch) will they be good for this?

Both are very fine knife steels .At the high hardening temperatures the steel will oxidize very quickly unless protected. Either harden in salt or use stainless steel foil.Do your grinding before HT...These steels require careful control of temperature and time !!
