Does anyone know of a book that has heat treating information for most all steels, espesially blade steels? That would be a nice book to own I think. Bruce

I found a fairly good book on heat treating at MSC supply. Covers most blade steel, 5160 1090 and even D2 A2. Does not go much into SS though. Another great source of info is a manual put out by Pacific Steel Co. Their "Stock List and Reference Book." It has a lot if info on HT various steels and also great source of technical info on types and chem make up of steel. The HT book was $35 +ship. Pacific Charges $25 for theirs unless you are a major client. Pacific's Phone 1(800) 547-1091, MSC has it in their BIG BOOK page 2590, Item #00071191 called "Heat Treatment, Selection and Application of Tool Steels." Their ph 800 645-7270. Hope these will do it for ya.

Somewhere on the Internet I read a great review of this book and its value for knife steels so I ordered a copy for myself from Amazon. I have not received it yet so cannot attest to its worth. "Heat Treatment, Selection, and Application of Tool Steels" by Bill Bryson. It is about $35.

The Making ,Shaping and Treating of Steel by US Steel Corp. is the industry "bible" on all things that goes into steel production.
Its about 1500 pages thick. New ones cost about $125.00 or so,used, older copies 10.00 -35.00 or so.It has technical data on just about everything from ore extraction to chemistry ,heattreating and much more.
A good book on just heattreating is The Heattreaters Handbook.
I believe this is put out by ASM.
Do a search for there site, they have dozens of books on all aspects of metalworking, welding, heattreating, etc, etc.
Also check out used book dealers on the net.
Most liberaries will have some books on metallurgy-at least here in the rust belt.
Interlibary loan would also be a good resource,
Hope this helps.
