Heat treating for a beginner.

Being new to knife making, I don't know too much about it. I've done my research, and I've come to the conclusion that heat treatment is an incredibly important step in making a good knife. The main problem for me is that I can't seem to find a good kiln to treat my knives in. I'm looking for something that works well, but isn't expensive. The KF 13.5 by Evenheat seems great, except for the price tag, and I haven't been able to find a used one anywhere. Any recommendations and advice would be greatly appreciated.

This should probably have been placed in the knifemakers shop talk area...

But.... You could go a couple different ways.

1) Build a forge, heat treat in it. ( downfall is that you won't be as accurate as in a kiln until you get really good at it )
2) save your money and buy a kiln ( some of them are expensive, etc )
3) send out to say Peter's Heat treating and save as you go to get a kiln ( kind of expensive, but you could get started and still make profit if you sell the knives you make)
4) Find a maker close enough to you that is willing to help you out and let you use his/hers heat treating equipment.

Lots of different ways to heat treat. Don't let people tell you that you can't do it one way, but understand that there are limitations two every different way.

Make sure you pick the right steel that will help you get the best knife with the heat treating you pick.

Whoops. Sorry about that, I'm new to these forums, if you couldn't tell =P. Thank you so much for the help, and have a wonderful day!
