If managed to weld some 1084 between 1mm nickel and 1020. Been trying to do some research on heat treatments but can’t find anything definitive. What’s the go with nickel sandwiched does it change to 815 degree quench?, soaks times? Please help 😥

From my understanding Larrin (or Hoss) saidHT'ing San Mai type is HT for the core since the outside layers don't really affect anything, not even to slow the quench any. Meaning that water will "could" cause cracks in the core same as if the core was the only metal, solid 1080 blade vs only the core.

generally speaking, the cladding jacket protects the core from cracking....I've Hardened a few hundred blades now in water and never had one crack.
as always, the details matter....
K Kiwichef the only definitive thing you need to know is how to HT the core materials as mentioned above

I don't think it would change the quenching dynamics at all. Heat transfer would be the same.

The nickel does two things. It stops carbon migration from the high carbon core to the lower carbon cladding. Second, it creates a nice hamon like white stripe along the junction of core/cladding. The faux-hamon is what it is mainly used for.
