Heat treating in Portland, OR

Hey guys. I recently moved out to Portland, OR and a group at my church is looking to make a quorum knife (all men, ages span from 18-35 or so). There's about 10-15 of us and it would likely be a simple necker. We have the profiling covered but I don't have a heat treat setup here. We might turn it into a project to make a heat treating oven since one guy is an engineer and it sounds like he probably has access to all/most of the materials, we would just have to make it...

Anyway, starting to ramble (it's late), if I'm not able to do the heat treat do you guys know of anybody around the Portland area that might be able to? I'd love to send them off to Bos or somebody but I'd prefer to be able to go to somebody's shop and "assist" since I've never done a heat treat and I think a lot of the guys would really interested in the step-by-step. The only knife-makers I know in the area are Scott Ickes and Raymond Richards but they are both really busy guys and I don't know if this would be possible with them.

Any input?

Oh, steel will most likely be 1080 or 1095 from Kelly Cupples; I haven't been able to get a hold of Aldo to see if he has any 1084 left... (I know he had rough Christmas...).

I think we might actually be opting to build our own heat treating oven since we have access to all the materials (as long as I can find somebody local who has some firebrick... But if anybody does have some references to knife-makers here in Portland just in case the project goes south that would be great!

Amcardon,

If you Email me with a phone # and a good time to call we can discuss your heat treating options.

PS- USE YOUR REAL NAME WHEN YOU SEND THE #

Are you kidding? There is a higher concentration of knife manufacturing companies in Portland than any other city in the US. It should be as easy to find a heat treater in Portland than a hooker in Vegas. Open up the yellow pages and let your fingers do the walking.

Hey Larry!! Looks like we were both west coasters at one time :) I was in Portland and Cannon Beach about 8 to 7 years back :)

I'm still a born and bred Oregonian with feet firmly planted in Eugene. My shop and warehouse are still there. I'll be headed out there mid March for Knife Expo and the OKCA show and work in the shop for a month or so. Lots of stabilizing and custom guitar orders lined up. I semi "retired" last year and bought a house here in north Georgia near the kids and grand kids before they get older...

This will be my 4th year at BLADE, table H15...see you there...

That was mw last year with about 5 knives, thanks to my day job. I have started my build up for this year. I'll come by and see whay you have.
