I have just finished profiling and grinding my first 3 knives. My son owns a jewelry store with a casting oven. I would like to try my hand at heattreating these blades. At what temp. do I heat the blades and for how long? Also do I have to use foil to wrap the blades or will they come out all right without the foil. After hardening the blades how long and at what temp. in the oven for a RC of 57-58? Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello Pawnbroker,

For 01 you will want to bring it up to 1500 F (816 C) and then quench in oil. You won't need the foil, foil is for stainless and 01 is a high carbon, non-stainless steel.
My guess for a Rc of 57-58 would be to put the blade in an oven at 450 F(230 C) for a half a hour to a hour. Hope this helps.

before you heat the blade you should have some way to heat the oil to about 150 degree .this will help prevent cracks in the steel.

also after heat treat as soon as possible you want to temper your blades.you can temper at 425 degree for 1 hour.Itemper the blades several times at that temp.

Thanks for the help. I am anxious to heattreat my first 3 blades and finish them up. It is with the help of other forumites that we get things done right the first time around.
