When heat treating with an oven, is there any pro's or con's to ramping the oven up to full tempture ASAP. Or should I ramp the tempture at another rate? I.E. 1400 degrees the first hour. Not just for the heat treatment of the steel but the life of the heat treating oven.

Jeff, As far as heating the oven up as fast as it will go I've never had a problem with mine untill the fire. I had my Paragone for over 10 years. I'd say for the last 6 or 7 years I mainly used it for the temper cycles or if I had some steel I wanted to anneal.

With any of the ovens knifemakers use it will not matter. If it has a temperature setting control, just set it to the desired temp.Setting it to 2000 will not get it to 1650 any faster than setting it to 1650 in the first place.I have never been able to convince the gals at the store that the HVAC will not cool or heat faster if the control is pushed all the way over. The heat up rate is set by the wattage of the elements in the HT oven. When it gets to the pre-set temp it turns them off.Programmable ovens can be set to heat up and cool down at a certain rate if desired, but that is for avoiding stress,or annealing things,it doesn't affect the life of the oven.

Sorry if I sound stupid, but I have gotten a ton of answers on this one: After I take the blades out of heat treat, does it harm the oven to leave the door open to cool down, or should I leave it shut and let it cool down all night long? Just wondering, as answers are about 50/50 either way. Wanted to see what folks think on this forum.

Thanks in advance,

Hank

Doesn't mater. When it is off it will cool down one way or the other.I would close it for safety reasopns.
