Does anyone here heat treat A2? I found a rough profiled blade when cleaning out the shop and want to finish it. It will be a small kitchen blade, about 4 or 5 inches long and an inch wide with a 3” stick tang. The stock is 1/16” thick. I posted a while ago about doing it with just files and such but I’m working on other things so I’d like to finish it as quickly as possible once I start on it.

We heat treat quite a bit of A2 for knife makers.

I made a test knife out of the rest of this steel but due to various errors on my part I couldn’t get it to work. I plan to profile the blade and polish it to remove some rust that’s developed. What is the recommended grit to finish? I was thinking 220.

well the grit is not very critical. Generally you just want to stay away from anything under 50 grit. But we get blades that are very rough and come out fine.

If you are asking about finish post HT, I take A2 to 220 and then a red Scotchbrite followed by a green Scotchbrite. Makes a great working knife.

For final finish I’m planning on 320 or so. I’ve sent out blades in with the same finish I received in the precision ground condition, but this one has some rust I’ll have to remove first. I was under the impression too course a finish could cause problems during hardening.
