In terms of quality and turnaround time, who do you recommend for heat-treating services? I work mostly with ATS-34, and was thinking about having the blades treated by D'Alton Holder. I think he charges $5/blade plus you pay shipping, but cost isn't much of an issue for me. I tried doing it myself once, but my microwave broke

Derrick,

It depends on how many knives you are doing at one time.

If you are sending a couple of blades at a time, I would use D'Alton Holder at $5.00 per blade, he does great work.

If you are sending 12 or more knives at a time, you can't beat Paul Bos. He get's $60.00 for any amount of knives from 1-20 (so you can see sending only a couple at a time would be expensive), and $3.00 per blade from 20 blades on up. There is a small extra charge if you mix steel types - but I don't remember what that is though.

Hope this helps,
Bob

D' doesnt do the heat treat, he has it done locally, and no offense to him, but I have talked to a few people who werent happy with the heat treater...Paul only does air hardening steels by the way, as the EPA idiots wont let him boil the oil into the atmosphere cause it might give algore a headache!!!!!!!!! darn govt!!!!!!!! Paul Bos 1900 weld blvd, el cajon cal 92020...

Thanks Bob, Tom

My sister and nephew live in El Cajon, and I'm planning on heading out there sometime this summer. Maybe I'll just grab my first batch of blades and drop in for a personal visit

Wulf, you'll like Paul. He's a super guy, and does wonders with steel. Besides the best heat treating I think there is, he also straightens blades when they warp as mine do. That, in my mind, is what service is all about. He really cares about your blades.

for once jerry is right...well maybe i shouldn't go quite that far....but I have been sending my blades to Paul for 18 years.... he does very good work..and like the rest of us...he is only human....he has made a mistake or two along the line...but as far as I can see he is the best http://www.mayoknives.com

The only thing that I can add about Paul Bos is:

If he has a problem, whether it is something you did or he did, Paul gets on the phone and discusses things with you. He is very easy to speak with and your problem, if it something he can correct during the heat treating process, will get solved. You can't find anyone better to do your heat treating.
