Now that I have an oven I am trying to make some folder springs. In the past I have used a torch with mixed results. Does anyone know how to heat treat 440C or should I stick with 01?

in my humble Opinion i Would use 1095/ 5160/O1 but not 440 My Belief is that a "Normal" Spring is Made from any of the Above Steel is Usually Just fine!! Stainless is Completely Different For Heat Treat !! you need a Furnace type Oven and Foil and A Cryo Dip then the Tempering it can get Very Complicated Quickly !!:) ;)

I have used 440c for slip joint springs for years. If the blade is 440c then I use 440c for the spring. I put the spring in the package with the blade when hardening. Draw at 1100 degrees for 2 hours. Should give you around 51Rc.
