Heat treating stainless and using ATP 641

I was curious about the successes of using ATP 641 for the anti-scale on stainless blades that are being heated at 1950-2100F.

I have some and would rather use that instead of buy expensive foil. I searched around and didn't find much info on using it for stainless just people curious about using it for carbon anti-scale.

Who has done it and what was your result?

I've used ATP-641 when heat-treating CPM3V and CPM154, both of which have high austenitizing temps around the ~2000ºF mark (if I remember right!). I would describe it as 'working somewhat'. There were large sections of the blade that were pretty pristine after heat-treat, but also some sections (looked like brush marks) that had decarb. Everything sanded out cleanly with say 15-20 minutes of work at the most, but I still prefer a double layer of foil for how clean it leaves the blades.

I find personally that I worry much less with the foil as it's much less fussy and you're more likely to 'know' that it's going to come out right. Stuff like ATP-641 can be fussy to get applied to the blade right... ATP-641 is definitely less expensive, however you may pay for that with extra time spent on clean-up when compared to foil.

You spent far more on the blade, hours of time, money on abrasives, and a buck or so in electricity for the oven.....why would you try and save a dollar on stainless HT foil?????

Even for a very large knife foil is only 70-80 cents.

I was just curious. all the foil that I see that is rated above the 2100F that I need is more than $50. Figured I would ask about it.

Yeah, that seems like a lot, but it usually comes out to about $2 per square foot. Not too many blades need a whole square foot of tool wrap.
