I recently had an M390 blade heat treated by a local heat treating shop. My aust temp is 2066F, which is unlike any temperature their furnace usually runs, so they had to HT my blade in a dedicated furnace, and they had to charge me extra, much much extra.

The shop usually heat treat SKD11 (which is D2) at 1886F for 2 hours, I plan on quenching my blades with these SKD11 to cut down cost.

Almost all stainless super steel I can find have the mininum aust temp at 1950F, the lowest I could find are CPM154 and S35VN at 1900F.

So can I aust CPM154, S35VN, or even M390 at 1886F for 2 hours and the blade would still by properly hardened? Or I should just stick to carbon steel? Thanks

I used to have to exact same problem (before I do HT myself) and from my experience you should stay away from steel with very high austenitizing temp like M390. Others steel like CPM-154, XHP or even S35VN will do decent at 1886F, at least if the tempering is around 370F it should yields no less than 59HRC.
