Heat treating TI

I'm new to the CRK forum...just got my first CRK Sebenza early this week. I'm afraid it will not be the last.

In reading this forum through the week, I saw a reference to the fact that Mr. Reeve heat treats the locking bar on the knives. I don't know much about Ti and wondered if the heat treat is to harden the locking bar. I assume that he first heats the Ti and then quenches it...am I right. The only reference I saw, and I'm sorry I don't remember the source, mentioned that the locking bar is at about 90 RC after this process. If so, the locking bar is harder than the blade tang. This seems a bit hard to believe.

I understand that either the tang or the locking bar ( I assume usually the locking bar) needs to be at a lower RC to reduce slipping.

Can any of you shed light on this heat treat process on the Ti locking bar? I often try to understand too much about things...Oh well.

Thank you,
:)

Edit: By the way, I did a search and didn't find anything specific on this topic. I hope I didn't miss it and I'm creating a redundant thread. Thanks again.

I'd suggest ordering a CRK DVD, which among other things, shows this exact process.

It's no the whole lockbar, just the face of the lock where it meets the blade and down a little bit.

RC90, I don't know about that.

Locking is also a function of the geometry of the locking face, you can make knive with a soft sticky face, but the stick on unlock and wear fast.

Just on the contact point where liner meets blade tang. It's my understanding that the titanium is around 52 on the Rockwell C scale and that the ti will wear against the hardened steel blade tang. By bringing the Rockwell up a few points on the ti lockbar you will save a little on the wear. The Buck/Strider 880/881 do this on the newer models and I think that it is done by a few others.

Thanks, Cutter17.

This sounds more reasonable...I had heard that the lock face was brought up to 90 RC....I found that "hard" to believe.

Thanks for the information.

I'm trying to find the DVD that DaveH mentioned...I didn't see it on the CRK website...I hope they haven't sold out.

:)

I saw DVD's on display at in the CRK showroom last week. They've got them.

Thanks everyone. I'll have one on the way very, very soon.

This Sebenza is suiting my tastes very well. I've been on the search for the perfect 3" folder for quite a while...While the Sebbie may not be 100% what I envisioned as perfect, it must be at least 99%. In fact, I think it is close enough that my search is over for a long time....except to get a second one as backup.

Thanks again for the DVD info.
:)

Okay...the DVD is on the way from Chris Reeve's shop. In talking with the folks there I did learn that the heat treated Ti lock face is at a higher RC than the blade.

Very interesting.
