heat treating

If you over heat your blade hot enough to ruin the temper can it be reheat treated and if so is their a limit to how many times this can be done?
I just got to wondering about this.
 
If the temper went too high, just re-do the HT from the start. Within reason, there is no limit. Unless it went above 500F, I would test the edge and see if it is really too soft.
