Heat Treating?

I know that Busse has their own formula for steel (INFI) and their guarded heat treating method. This question does not pertain to those.

But I have seen some models of SR and Busse knives that are made from more common steels such as D2. Does SR and Busse use a similar guarded heat treating method on those steels as well? Making them more durable than other knives on the market using D2, etc...? Thanks. :)

My understanding is Busse & SRKW do use proprietary tempering protocols to gain the optimum from every steel they use.

busse combat no longer uses anything other then INFI.

one of the few items that was an acception to this was the talliwacker, wich was kind of an introduction (son/daughter of the basic series) to swamp rat coming into existance.

swamp rat uses a vairety of steels, depending on what will perform well and keep costs reletively low. scrap yard seems to take whatever is left over and make the best of whats available to keep costs as low as possible.

swamp rat does have a proprietary heat treat for s7, and 52100, nameing these steels sr77, and sr101. They do have a proprietary heat treat for d2, but they did not change the name. as to why s7 became sr77, and 52100 sr101, i'm not sure. possibly because the steel structure or performance dynamics are so different from what is currently available using other heat treatments that it warranted a different name.

I'm sure that close freinds and family have some privy to the heat treating secrets, but its certainly not something that will be posted on the internet as a "how to" guide.

Something I've been wondering about is the temperature tolerances of the Rat blades. Does their heat treatment still allow the steels to reach higher degrees before the temper is lost, like INFI?

Since the Wauseon heat treat was so successful on the D2 performance testing for SRKW, I would guess it was a closely guarded secret. Did you ever see any of that testing data Porkerson posted for the SR D2 BD and skinners? Amazing, I tell ya!

(Probably should channel the D2 stuff over to the swamp but, this was relevant to the thread, so I posted it.)
