Hi,
I'm planning to build a heat treatment oven and need some K23 firebricks, but all the suppliers are in America and I am in the UK. Would anybody know where to buy some K23 firebricks in the uk?

This being your first post I'll respond to say Welcome aboard - but I wouldn't have a clue where to purchase bricks in UK. Good luck.

Have you searched the UK's Amazon?

Welcome. I made my own HT oven from USED bricks from ceramic kilns. They can be found free or cheap. Yes they have existing grooves but trust me turned 180 degrees you'll never know. Plus the top and bottom can be used for the top, bottom or the door. But honestly the size of a knife kiln you don't need them for anything but the door. Just an idea.

Welcome iz9002. Fill out your profile so we know where you live in the UK.

In the UK, they use vermiculite firebrick for soft bricks. They are closer to a K-23. Search for vermiculite firebricks and check with those suppliers.

Check on British Blades. Also check with Ground Flat Stock. They may know a supplier.

That said, search for "Kiln Supplies", "Pottery Supplies", and "Boiler Supplies". Don't forget Amazon and eBay.

Where in the UK?

Offhand, I can think of Vitcas near Bristol, StudWeldPro in Newark, Jays Refractory in Dronfield and IMS in Bromborough on the Wirrall. There are plenty of other sources. Potters suppliers are usually a good bet. My best source was a local company who were refractory installation specialists and were making pet crematoria.

The best IFBs I have used for HT kilns are JM23, from Morgan Thermal Ceramics: lightest weight, best insulation, easiest to saw, file and groove with a router, plus the most accurately dimensioned. Also quite expensive (and well worth it IMO). I think they are made in Italy and are broadly equivalent to the K23, also from Morgan Thermal Ceramics, which are made/available in the USA. IMS are probably a good source for the JM23s.
