heat treatments for blades

I asked tis on the general disscusion board and it was suggested I ask this question heer.
Does anyone know about heat treatments and how they effect blade performance? Also which ones work best, with what kind of steel. I would imagine the case hardened wouldn't be good because you could sharpen though the treatment. Also does anyone know about cryogen treatment for blades, I've never heard about it and looking to hear more about it. And finaly what kind of treatments do you use.
