Heatbath.com - "Stop off" no-carb heat-treat protective coating

My experience w/ Heatbath is that they flat out refuse to sell products to anyone not in an industrial environment.

interesting...I'll have to inquire about that...

anybody else use it?

I just ordered some of the melting powder stuff from Brownells that Tery Primos did a tutorial on. More to follow.

When I sent email to their corporate address I got bounced with the "industry only" line. I then got the name and email of a salesman who will deal with us from one of the forum posts and had no problems.

My experience was trying to purchase heat treatment salts products from them. They flat out refused to sell it to me since I was not in their view an "industrial environment heat treatment facility".

I've purchased heat treat salts from them several times ... no troubles.
You have to realize that you're going to be ordering minimum quantities. (Last time I bought it was something like 100 pounds/product). (It's only something like $1/pound so it's not too bad.) I would imagine if you're asking for 10 pounds or something, they're going to KNOW you're not in the business.

Plain ol Bill, one of these days you are going to HAVE to put yer shoes on and go to town so's you can larn some of these things.

You'd think that a guy who built bridges under fire with the SeaBees in 'Nam, welded half the danged nuke boilers in the nation, hangs out with all those WA damascus makers, and is a co-inventor/manufacturer of Timascus would be just a bit more savvy about something like minimum quantities being the problem with Heatbath. Jeesh, Bill, what the heck, eh? Thank God that Elaine is there to wipe your chin. :D

I'm sure that even though we've had numerous instances here of people saying they've been refused and that Heatbath's cooperation is entirely dependent on to whom one speaks, this has nothing to do with your problem whatsoever.

Yer just gonna have to get with it, Bill. ;) ;)

Mr. Caswell, since you had no problems, please publish your specific contact information for Heatbath, including the name of the person. A reliably cooperative source would be appreciated by many here. Thank you.

I've ordered from them three times in all since about 1995. Usually about 200 pounds at a time (100/ Thermoquench 100/ Nusal).
Each time I ordered it was with a different rep.
They used to deliver to my house, but the last time I had to pick the stuff up at a terminal in L.A.

Of course I always bought using my company name "This is Joe from ....."

I don't know how people are coming across, but if you're just using your name and asking about micro quantities (200 pounds is a pretty small order, BTW), you've just told them you're not in the business. As a result, if they have some policy against selling to the 'public' you've volunteered to be turned down.

Frankly, I'm surprised some of the knifemaking supply places don't sell the stuff. It's a lot less hazardous to handle than ceramic fiber, and probably just as potentially profitable.

If you're having problems, perhaps the salesman to whom dlpierson refers could be of help.

Thank you. I was aware of the contact Mr. Pierson mentioned. If there were another "friendly', I hoped to solicit that additionally. A second citation in a different thread doubles someones opportunity to search it out here. I was fortunate enough to buy the oill I wanted from someone who had purchased in quantity.

Heatbath has been problematic for any number of people here. Some of the contacts are indeed more amenable to a small order than others. Your point is well taken that the lack of a "company name" may create a difficult and perhaps insurmountable obstacle. Many companies used to distributing to commercial concerns are not willing to deal with the regulations and liabilites associated with "citizen buyers"; some won't deliver to a residential address, period. Federal licensing regulations also apply in some instances.

It is indeed a curiosity that none of the supply houses sell Heatbath products in small quantity. Perhaps it is regulatory, or perhaps Heatbath doesn't permit resale. It is a very interesting question.

Thanks, again.

fascinating info - thanks for sharing.

what about their "stop-off" decarb stuff? Better than PCB No-Scale?

Daniel, are you aware of "Turco Pretreat"? It is a solvent based orange solution that one can either spray or dip into. Allowed to dry, it is much easier in application than PBC. The trick is to get a thin coat. Thick spots will create some minor pitting. It works well into SS temps and leaves only a light black film that cleans off easily.

It is sold by K&G in quart quantities cheap enough to allow expermentation for your application.

I've never seen the Heatbath product mentioned before on the forums I frequent.

I finally found the contact info the salesman I worked with: Tom Walen.
