Heavy Dagger....a beginning

While at the Gun Show this weekend I had a request from the promoter for a small dagger with the strength and penetrating power of a military bayonet. This is what I have come up with. 3/16ths 154-CM , 7.5 inches long, blade an inch wide overall width will be 1.5 inches. Convex bevel on one side and a penetration point, sometimes referred to as an American Tanto. Thinking of canvas Micarta scales. Any way here is the beginning.

How does one make a knife. ...Start with a flat piece of steel and remove anything that does not look like a knife. Not quite that simple. So here we are to date. The dagger has been shaped and ground through 180 grit. The holes in the handle are there for balance. When I put on the Micarta scales the balance point should be where the blade and "guard" meet. Right now it is a little blade heavy, when finished it should feel like nothing is in the hand. Evenly balanced. More tomorrow.

Got some more more done on the dagger today. Flats are taken to 500 grit then polished. The edge bevel (hollow grind) is taken to 1500 grit as is the upper and the spine. This will not be a false upper on this one the front inch or so will be taken to an edge. Both upper and lower edges are now just this side of sharp. Pattern on the spine is the "Vine and Thorns" Hopefully I will get to heat treat it this weekend. Half an hour of work that takes all day. Look through all the pictures to see the progression. Comments always welcome. Thanks for looking , Ken
