Hello,
I'm looking for a heavy duty folder for work (outside in the forest mostly) as a complement to my fixed blades.
I'm looking for a 4'' blade with a tough locking mecanism.
I was thinking about the cold steel recon 1, what other options are there ?
I would prefer a production knife with a reasonable price (under 100$)
Thanks

I use a CRKT M16 as my daily carry. 3.8" blade, solid lock. The M21 series less tactical than the M16 FWIW.

ZT 0200. the recon may be cheaper, but the ZT gives you better steel, better handle scales, a larger blade, and generally more heft. also, if you can break either one, then you don't need a folder, you need a prybar and a busse.

+1 on what the geek said. You might want to check out a couple of Boker Plus knives, the Field Marshall ( a Todd Begg design ), and the Ressurection ( a Jim Burke design ). These two are under $100, and built "heavy". Though I haven't had either, I've found the Boker Plus line to be very well built, and these are made in China. Both have 440C steel, and I think we have settled the "argument" of where the 440C originates, and that is in the USA. Like I said, I have not had these two knives, but am thinking seriously about the Field Marshall, and maybe the Ressurection also. And even though it is a little over the $100 budget, the ZT0200 mentioned, would be an excellent choice!

fixed blade. There is something about cutting those heavy heavy duty zip ties used to hold together heavy objects where I feel good using a fixed blade.

I just got a Hogue 4" aluminum handle folder today. Drop point blade. It's a beast of a knife. Solidest folder I EVER saw. USA made, cryo'd 154CM blade steel. This looks like the best working knife ever. Aluminum handle's said to be kinda uncomfortable in the cold- the G-Mascus might be better for those sort of conditions. I got mine online for about $150.00. Money well-spent IMO.

+1 to the ZT suggestions-Love the 0200-as Turk said, will take you to hell and back.

Todds new shop in Petaluma ca is functionizing the Boker Field Marshalls,he is personly taking one at a time and installing IKBS so washers bye bye no blade play, he is also Jewel icing the pocket clip and giving it a proper tune,as well as Jewel icing the liners and the the teardrop around the pivot. Todd also gives the lock a proper tune all this adds up to a really kickass knife made by Boker designed by Todd and functionized by Todd to work perfectly. NICE!!!!! Who does that! He is charging 200 bucks to make it act respectable like his designs should. I know he saw the first Boker field marshalls hit his shop and said I can't give these to friends like this and thus the functionizing begins! his shop #707 242 1790 I know all this because I have one it's as close as someone can get to a field marshall feeling and looking like Todds work.

if ZT maybe a ZT0350ST it's a tad cheaper than the 0200 and comes with s30V steel

For under $100 your choices are severely limited. I would say the CS Recon series is a good choice. I dont see how you can top the Triad lock for strength and durability for under $100. There is also a new spearpoint version that looks very good.

I have a couple of the "big dog" CRKT's and they seem to be made pretty well. They certainly appear to be strong. I bought the black one used and I intend to do some rough tests on it.

I agree with the others regarding the ZT line. I have a 550, 350, and some to be coming 200. Beefy and rugged, you won't be disappointed and if you don't like them, the exchange here is a good place to sell them. Or heck, if the price is right one of us will probably buy another.

My plan is to pick up a Benchmade Griptilian for its durability. You should check em out!
